Psychology was first introduced in Indonesia in the early 20th century by Dutch missionaries.
In 1953, the University of Indonesia opened the first psychological study program in Indonesia.
In 1963, an Indonesian Psychology Association (API) was established which became a forum for psychologists in Indonesia.
In 1966, API became a member of the International Union of Psychological Science (IUPSYS).
In 1971, the Faculty of Psychology was established by Gadjah Mada University (UGM) which became the second Psychology Faculty in Indonesia.
In 1982, an Indonesian Clinical Psychology Association (IPKI) was established which became a forum for clinical psychologists in Indonesia.
In 1994, the University of Indonesia opened a psychology study program in the first English in Indonesia.
In 2002, an Indonesian Industrial Psychology and Organization Association (IPIOI) was established which became a forum for industrial and organizational psychologists in Indonesia.
In 2011, Airlangga University opened the first psychological study program in Surabaya.
At present, psychology has become one of the popular disciplines in Indonesia with the many universities that offer psychology study programs.
