• American Civil War occurred from 1861 to 1865, with a confederation led by 11 southern states who wanted to separate from the Union.
• Among around 2.75 million soldiers who fought in the war, more than 620,000 were killed - the largest number of lives in the history of the United States.
• This war began when the confederation attacked Fort Sumter, a fortress off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina on April 12, 1861.
• Abraham Lincoln became President of the United States in March 1861 and led his country during this war.
• This war took place throughout the United States, but many battles took place in southern states, including in Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, and Mississippi.
• On January 1, 1863, Lincoln issued an emancipation proclamation that freed all slaves in the rebellious southern state.
• One of the most famous battles in the war was the battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, of which more than 50,000 soldiers were killed or injured.
