Opera was first introduced in Indonesia in the 19th century by Dutch invaders.
The first opera staged in Indonesia was Martha by Friedrich von Flotow in 1871.
In the colonial period, opera became an elite entertainment and could only be witnessed by certain circles.
In the 1920s, the first opera group emerged consisting of an Indonesian named Opera Indonesia.
Opera Indonesia was led by R. Soeharto in 1926 and succeeded in showing Aida by Giuseppe Verdi.
In the 1930s, the Peking Opera Group also emerged which combined the Chinese and Western opera styles.
After independence, opera becomes more open and can be enjoyed by the wider community.
In the 1960s, the first modern opera group emerged in Indonesia called Opera Kecil.
Little Opera is led by W.S. Rendra and succeeded in showing works such as Carmen and The Marriage of Figaro.
